We need your help!

As you may now know the Auckland City Council has sent out letters to consult on ‘Making Dominion Road Better’ proposing the following:

The council’s Transport Committee has endorsed consultation on a new design for the road that has, in each direction:
·         a separate cycle lane, to ensure cyclists experience as little conflict with general traffic as possible;
·         a T2 lane (for all vehicles with two or more occupants –  including buses); and
·         a general vehicle lane.

You can visit www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dominionroad to see the proposed design.

The extent of the consultation includes business owners, residents and property owners and it appears the letter has also been distributed to the wider community.

The Business Association has a number of concerns with this proposal and will be sending in a submission outlining our issues and in addition we will offer sensible suggestions towards a compromise. A copy of our submission will be posted to our website next week.

There is no argument that Dominion Rd is a main arterial road for the Auckland Region but we feel there is absolutely no reason to decimate our local businesses in the process. To this end we want to draw your attention to the sentence in the letter that is of most concern:

To deliver this design for the road, on-street parking on Dominion Road would need to be removed along the entire corridor, even during off peak hours – and some right turning restrictions would also be introduced.

So here’s where you can help.
Please ensure you, in your own words, send in a submission opposing the suggestions above and below are a few points to get you started:
·        Separate cycle lane – we do not feel there is sufficient evidence of cycle numbers using Dominion Rd to warrant a separate cycle lane
·        T2 – there is no evidence that this will enhance the traffic flow and we feel this will actually hold up the commuting buses
·        24/7 removal of the on-street car parking on Dominion Rd – we absolutely oppose this
·        Right turn restrictions - there aren’t enough connecting roads to enable people to go where they want to get
·        Designations – we request the immediate removal of all designations from properties along Dominion Rd

The consultation closes on Sunday, 1 August, so go to http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/auckland/transport/dominion/say.asp  to have your say.

Tell your staff, friends and anyone you can to send in a submission.

Let’s make sure we send a strong and clear message to Council!
